Vinyl record packaging at makkipak, helping the vinyl revival.
When Oasis recently announced it was re-forming for live gigs later this year, vinyl sales went up by more than 500% in a week. There is clearly still a great demand for vinyl records, some fetching many thousands of pounds. The reason for this demand is simply that many vinyl albums are not produced anymore and therefore there is a massive demand to own these precious pieces of music history. For example, Ringo Starr owned the first printing of the White Album from 1968. This became the second most valuable vinyl record in history when it was sold at auction for a whopping $790,000.
So why are vinyl records still popular ?
Nowadays Spotify offers much easier access to your music with just a couple of swipes on your mobile phone. Streamed music is infinitely easier to carry with you. Vinyl records can certainly not be listened to at the gym, carrying your turntable and a set of speakers onto the treadmills would surely be frowned upon by your gym manager. The resurrection of vinyl records is driven by nostalgia, sound quality and artist engagement. How often have you listened to a track on your playlist and have no idea what band it is ? Some people don’t care, they like a tune and then quickly move on to the next. Many people however miss the connectivity to the band that vinyl records provide.
The album sleeve would often provide lyrics and photographs of the band, we would often read the lyrics and question their meaning only to be disappointed when the artist is interviewed drunk on MTV and can’t ever recall writing the song. But nevertheless, we had some sort of artist engagement that seems to have disappeared with streaming services. The sound quality on vinyl is regarded as superior with the correct set up. A good quality vinyl turntable and speakers will feel like the band is playing in your living room.
